The term disciple is common to all the four gospels. The evangelist John uses it often to designate those chosen out of the world by Jesus to follow him and to accompany him. Some scholars are of the opinion that the fourth gospel can be called #the Book of the Disciples# and the theme of discipleship is diligently developed in the fourth gospel from the first Book of Signs to the second Book of Glory. As Raymond Brown points out, John emphasizes discipleship as the primary Christian category. Nevertheless, it is observed that the theme of the disciples in the gospel of John escaped from proper scholarly attention. One of the major reasonsis that the intense interest in this theme has been focused on the synoptic gospels and especially the gospel of Mark.
