Ghent University

We focuss on the interaction between social order, global conditions and representations of ethnicity in the African Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Burundi and Ijwi) in the nineteenth and twentieth century. From a world-systems perspective, the emphasis lays on the long term - before, during and after colonialism - and on the spatial aspect, exceeding the state as an investigation unit.
