The project approaches Sagalassos and its countryside from the late Roman and early Byzantine periods (4th to 7th centuries AD) into the mid Byzantine periode (7th to 13th centuries AD) from four different angles. Firstly, the patterns and changing nature of the urban and rural occupation is considered. Next, the implications of the attested evolving pattern of settlement are examined for three different aspects, being the impact on the social structure, the economic system and the ecology and natural environment. These aspects determined the settlement pattern, and should at the same time be seen as a function of the latter. The project wishes to map the interaction between these research domains, and introduce innovative models of interpretation for the study period.
