The battle over the emigrants: the competition between the different emigration ports over the emigrant trade from the European continent to New York 1815-1914

After 1815 European emigration to the United States started. A system developed by which shipping agents chartered space on a ship. In ordet to secure the supply a network of emigration agents developed as well. Besides Bremen and Le Havre the ports of Rotterdam, Liverpool, Antwerp and Hamburg attracted a share of this lucrative emigrant trade.
