Traditional approaches to the post-Roman periods in Anatolia and the Aegean have been confined to the study of Byzantine church architecture, fresco decoration, religious icon-painting, Islamic mosques and Ottoman palaces at the imperial capital of Constantinople/Istanbul. Research intothe development of rural life in the Byzantine and Ottoman provinces isslowly commencing with the study of historical sources. As a result, itseems that the main means to examine the development of the Byzantine and Ottoman countryside archaeologically lies with the potential of regional survey projects. The systematic excavations and intensive survey at the site of Sagalassos, and the intensive and extensive suburban surveysin its territory over the past years have already provided the framework and a rich ceramic database, not only for the purpose of establishing a typo-chronology of pottery styles and wares, but also for writingthe settlement- and culture-history of the region from the beginning ofthe
