Ghent University

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the role of suicide as a literary theme in French seventeenth century tragedy. The analysis begins with the works of early 'baroque' authors as Hardy and Rotrou (until 1630), predecessors of French classical drama, as represented by the very different tragedies of Corneille and Racine in the second half of the 17th century.
