Project

Effects of neuregulin on ventricular function: an in vivo study. Historic

University of Antwerp

The underlying mechanisms of neuregulin-mediated cardioprotection in vivo are unknow. The proposed research project investigates the role of eNOS and cGMP in the inotropic and cardioprotective effects of neuregulin using invasive pressure- volume measurements. We hypothesize that neuregulin induces venrticular cGMP production and therefore that the protective effects of neureguline depend on the activation level of PDE5 (which breaks down cGMP)

Project

VIB-Search for genes affecting progranulin-mediated neurodegeneration. Historic

University of Antwerp

Progranulin (PGRN) is a tightly regulated gene of which both, underexpression and overexpression are associated with life-threatening human diseases: autosomal dominant loss-of-function (LOF) mutations lead to FTLD, while overexpression promotes the invasive progression of a range of tumors. Therefore, therapies directly aiming at compensation of PGRN LOF in FTLD, e.g. PGRN replacement therapies, might be difficult to control within strictly defined bounds of non-pathological PGRN levels. In ...

The liberalisation of the labour market: an existential erosion of social law. Sub-contracting: the ultimate social dumping? Historic

University of Antwerp

The globalisation and Europeanisation of economic relations is generating a liberalised labour market. Cross-border sub-contracting pyramids have been created using EU legislation, particularly on the free movement of services. When such sub-contracting pyramids mask false self-employment, they seriously undermine social corrections to the free labour market. The research seeks to obtain a better legal insight into these mechanisms to submit effective legal remedies to policy makers.

The role of the innate immune system in neurodegeneration and neuroprotection. Historic

University of Antwerp

A neurodegenerative respons in peripheral axons tends to trigger an innate immune response in Schwann cells. In this project we would like to explore the precise role of this response and how it contributes to nerve regeneration and remyelination on one hand or - in cases where it gets out of control - to neurodegeneration on the other hand. A better understanding of these processes will allow us to manipulate and use this inherent capacity of our body for nerve protection and nerve regenerat...
