Large dwellings in Flanders. Development of architectural and users strategies in view of demographic trends and ecological constraints. Historic

Universiteit Hasselt

From an ecological perspective the available housing in Flanders is far from satisfactory, because of the abundance of large, underused dwellings. These large homes, which are often situated in low density neighbourhoods, are at odds with a policy of sustainability, since the latter implies the need to minimize energy consumption and green gases while large homes in sprawled neighbourhoods generate high direct (heating) and indirect (transport) energy consumption. To simply demolish this hous...

Identification of biomarkers using proteomics to detect cervical cancer. Historic

University of Antwerp

Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (mostly by "high risk" HPV-types 16, 18, 31, 45 en 58) and is worldwide the second most frequent cancer among females. Screening (using the classical "Papanicolaou smear") is based on the detection of morphological changes but is characterized by a low sensitivity. Therefore, the aim of this PhD project will be the identification of biomarkers using cervical vaginal fluid (CVF), by means of proteome analytical techniques, to detect premali...

Multi-Type ACO has different types of ants, all working together with their type, but competing with other types. This is again achieved by pheromones: ants are attracted to their own pheromone type and repelled by pheromone of another ant type. In this way it is possible to find disjoint paths with minimal combined cost simultaneously or we can place a pair of disjoint paths that are protected by a single backup tree. In the last application mentioned we show that it is possible to use the c...

Marine Teleosts and Elasmobranchs: differences in physiology lead to differences in sensitivity. Historic

University of Antwerp

Elasmobranchs possess a unique system for osmoregulation. They are slightly hyperosmotic compared to their environment due to high levels of urea and trimethylamino oxide in their body. Therefore, they absorb water continuously by osmosis and do not have to drink. This system creates an enormous urea gradient at the gills, which is supposedly maintained by urea back-transporters. This study aims at characterizing environmental influences on these transporters.

The role of insulin-like growth factor-I in protection and regeneration after transient focal brain ischemia Historic

Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Stroke represents the principle cause of invalidity in adults. Brain damage as a result of cerebral ischemia is a consequence of necrosis and apoptosis of neurons and glial cells and leads to upregulation of IGF-I expression in the central nervous system. However, maximal IGF-I concentrations are reached only after 5 days or longer. The literature shows that administration of the neurotrophic growth factor IGF-I after induction of focal cerebral ischemia in rats reduces cell death and tissue ...

Identification and characterisation of urea transporters in the gills of the spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias.

This study aims at identifying and characterizing these transporters.

Characterization of the risk increasing effect of progranulin missense mutations using in vitro cell models Historic

University of Antwerp

Progranulin (GRN) null mutations were identified as a cause of frontotemporal lobar degeneration. In addition to null mutation, missense mutations were observed. However, the contribution of these latter to the risk of neurodegeneration remains unclear. We will generate in vitro cell models that will distinguish polymorphisms from pathogenic mutations. This model will have important implications towards DNA diagnostics.

Policy Research Centre - Governmental organization in Flanders II: local governance. The impact of networks on local policy, politics and management Historic

Ghent University

Local governments become involved in a more network-like governance context. 'Local policy' and 'local straegy', often used in terms of 'autonomous organisation', become the product of these interactions. This evolution provokes questions on the meaning of 'local politics' and 'local policy', on the capacities of municipalities to function in these networks and on the way municipalities should organise themselves.

Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881) is currently seen as a key figure to the development of 19th century organ music. His influence as a teacher, virtuoso and composer reached far beyond the Belgian borders. Thus, the identification and ch...
