Drug treatment for applicants for international protection

The objectives of this study are fourfold. (1) Mapping / monitoring the current situation: Based on an online survey, we investigate in OI (Fedasil and others) (a) to what extent VIB are confronted with (critical incidents related to) substance use, (b) to which type of drug treatment applicants are referred and (c) what the experiences in the reception network are with referral and treatment. (2) On the basis of qualitative interviews with 2 staff members in at least 10 (n=20) OI operated by FedAsil, obstacles in access to drug treatment will be mapped. There will be 10 interviews with drug treatment personnel who have experience with the target group (including Alexius Grimbergen, MSOC, Free Clinic, Projet Lama asbl). (3) identification of obstacles during treatment are identified on the basis of 20 qualitative interviews with (former) applicants for international protection who came into contact with drug treatment. (4) Based on the results of the survey, qualitative interviews with aid workers (n=30) and with applicants for international protection (VIB) (n=20), and on recent scientific insights (see above, as well as updated ETHEALTH recommendations, 2018 VAD study, SEMID-EU) at the Belgian and European level, targeted recommendations at the organizational and political level will be formulated. A total of 50 interviews will be conducted.
