Fallmerayer and Dragoumis on the Greek nation and its mission

Book Contribution - Chapter

Jacob Philipp Fallmerayer and Ion Dragoumis are among the few people belonging to history who are still prominently present in the debates that agitate Greek public opinion. Fallmerayer is identified, in the modern Greek education system, as the typical U+201Cbad guyU+201D, the enemy of the Greek nation. Dragoumis, on the other hand, is generally considered to be the father of Greek nationalism, and is hailed by the nationalistic right as a patriot and as the leading representative of the national ideology. It is, therefore, rather surprising to find that precisely on the essential points of their diagnosis of the situation of modern Greece, there is complete agreement between them. The difference, of course, is in their assessment of this diagnosis.
