Jikkemien Vertonghen

Jikkemien Vertonghen works parttime as a business developer at the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy and parttime as a post-doctoral researcher at the research unit Sport & Society, both of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

In 2006 Jikkemien obtained a Master’s degree in Physical Education (option Sports Management) at the VUB. Immediately after her studies she started at the same university as a researcher and later on (May 2007) as a doctoral student. In April 2011, Jikkemien received her PhD in Physical Education and Movement Sciences, in which she analysed contextual factors (i.e., structural qualities of martial arts, type of guidance, characteristics and social context of martial arts participants) in youth martial arts practice. Since December 2012 Jikkemien is also a lecturer within the Master of Physical Education and Movement Science, specialisation sport management. Among other things she is responsible for the internship sportmanagement.

Jikkemien's research interest is related to personal and social development of children and youth through sports in general and martial arts in particular. Furthermore, Jikkemien has also a special interest in sport and detention. More specifically, how sports can be used as a tool in the rehabilitation of inmates.
