Project

An implantable sensor for heart activity monitoring

Due to the increasing number of heart failure patients there is a large interest in developing monitoring devices that optimize the treatment of the disease and reduce its cost on the health care system. Aim of the project is to develop a fully implantable accelerometer sensor for chronic monitoring of cardiac failure in patients. The device will capture the acceleration signal from the heart wall and it will provide, through a dedicated algorithm, an indication of cardiac contractility. A preliminary prototype of an acceleration sensor was already developed and tested on sheep acutely. Raw acceleration data from the cardiac wall were collected and compared with ventricular contractility measurements (gold standard technique). The existing prototype will be improved through the design of minimally sized sensor with a wireless transceiver for data and a wireless inductive power link. Such a sensor will be tested on animals in a chronic setting.
