TRPLe - TRP channel Research Platform Leuven

Aim of the TRP Research Platform Leuven (TRPLe) is to obtain fundamental new insight in the structure, function and (patho)physiological role of TRP channels, and to translate this knowledge into clinical applications for the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of human diseases. The 27 human members of TRP ion channel superfamily are quite diverse with respect to their activation mechanisms and expression patterns, which is reflected in a wide array of physiological functions. The applying consortium includes fundamental researchers experienced in TRP ion channel structure-function and physiology, as well as clinical specialists of organ systems and pathologies where TRP channels play a key role. This allows us to propose an ambitious project in which we will study selected TRP channels with respect to their molecular mode of action, modulation by cellular processes and small molecules, and physiological role, and apply this knowledge in preclinical and clinical studies in the fields of pain, diabetes, bladder dysfunction and cardiology.
