Platform for integrating psychological, pneumological, genetic, rehabilitative, immunological and neural aspects of dyspnea (PIPPGRIN_AD)

Dyspnea is the aversive cardinal symptom in prevalent respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but also in other diseases including cardiac diseases, cancer, psychiatric and psychosomatic diseases. Dyspnea is associated with severe disability and causes considerable individual and socio-economic burden. The present research initiative will form a multidisciplinary team of experts from different research fields in order to start a new research program on dyspnea. This team combines expertise from psychology, pneumology, rehabilitation sciences, psychiatry, genetics and neuroscience in order to fill important gaps in the understanding of this debilitating symptom. With a new state-of-the-art technical platform, this team will examine how dyspnea is influenced by certain psychological, neural, immunological, and genetic factors and how these factors and their interactions impact on the clinical status of patients suffering from dyspnea. The overarching aim is to establish jointly a new and integrated multilevel and multidisciplinary model of dyspnea, which contributes to improved treatment options.
