Linear and nonlinear optics in organic/inorganic hybrid nanomaterials

In this project, unique hybrid materials composed of inorganic nanoparticles decorated with organic, (all-) conjugated (block co)polymers will be fabricated. The two components are already known to be strongly (nonlinearly) optically active, but we make a solid argument that the two components enhance each others response dramatically. Using these materials, not only existing phenomena, but also unprecedented processes will be studied, for which new set-ups will be made. Next, two advanced, organized supramolecular structures will be fabricated, i.e. a multilayered structure and a photonic crystal composed of two different defects, the optical analogue of a p-n junction. In these materials, special optical effects will be demonstrated, such as asymmetric transmission, optical limiting and an optical p-n junction that can be steered by nonlinear optical pro cesses.
