Project

Exposure assessment: from individual characterization to biomarkers discovery

The consortium consisting of the unit Environment and Health and the unit BIOMAT are applying for a new ultra-performance liquid chromatography - triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC/MS/MS). The two units have a joint interest in assessing ‘exposure to’ and ‘effects of’ noxious agents (chemicals, pesticides, particulate matter, etc). To keep on performing on a high level, a novel UPLC/MS/MS is necessary. The versatility of this system enables the detection and quantification of very low concentrations of molecules/metabolites of exposure to noxious chemicals or epigenetic alterations in DNA in almost any type of samples. The projects for which a UPLC/MS/MS is necessary, range from: 1/ air and dermal exposure assessment to chemical agents; 2/ leaching of endocrine disruptors from solid materials; 3/ discovery of internal biomarker (urine, hair, blood) of exposure to diesel exhaust; 4/ assessing the epigenomic changes after low dose exposure to respirable fibers and nanomaterials and linking this exposure to health outcomes.
