Project

Oud vasthouden. Research on ageing, housing and policy.

Flanders is ageing. As people age, health and personal mobility often decline. At that point, housing (sensu lato) is more important than ever. Flemish policy makers strongly promote "ageing in place", but they do not take spatial preconditions into account. How do older people themselves experience their housing situation? Is the home adapted to their changing needs? Are amenities present and accessible? Is care available and what impact does the spatial context have on this?

The doctoral thesis is based on project research. It concerns research on pension migrants who moved to the coastal region; older people living in rural areas (case Westhoek and case Kempen); older people living in suburban areas and urban social and private tenants (with limited financial resources). We use qualitative research methods, mainly in-depth interviews with older people ageing in place, but also with policy makers and care actors.
