Court Interpreters’ Performance Analysis and Assessment: Oman as a Case study

The research rationale is to identify the strategies these interpreters adopt in order to perform their role within this immature environment and in the absence of code of and officially recognised guidelines. (please refer to the detailed proposal)

The research intends to answer the following core questions:

1. What interpreting modes and strategies do Omani court interprets apply when performing in real court setting?

2. To what extent are these interpreters conscious of the various aspects of their actual interpreting activity and the adoption of these modes and strategies?

3. What are the impacts of the application of those modes and strategies on the quality of the interpretation output?

4. What are the impacts of the intervention of a professional development programme on the overall interpreters’ performance with regard to the questions above?

In order to achieve the objectives of this study and answer the research questions above and achieve the objectives of this project, the research will adopt two main sequential procedures:

A. Theoretical part, aiming at drawing the conceptual framework for the analysis and assessment that will be conducted in the empirical part;

B. Empirical part, aiming at collecting authentic real-life data about court interpreters’ performance and the actual strategies the adopt to perform thus role.

The conceptual framework resulting from the theoretical part will be operated and for processing and interpreting the data collected at this level. Accordingly, the research question will be answered, conclusions are drawn and generalisations are provided. (Please refer to the detailed proposal)

The value of conducting this sort of research stems from the fact that very little research in the Arab world has tackled interpreting issues in general and court interpreting in particular. Till date, no single research has been conducted by Arab academies and language institutions to explore the various psychological and cognitive aspects of this activity as practiced and experienced by the interpreters. The proposed research is also different from previous ones with respect to its sample, method and procedures, by combining theoretical postulation and empirical verification.
