On Digital Schooling: An ethnographic investigation of BYOD schools through a sociomaterial lens

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model has been recently implemented at schools across the globe and this deployment has a profound impact on scholastic practices. Through adopting a tailored sociomaterial approach, this project aims to develop an understanding of how scholastic practices are relationally composed at BYOD schools. The scholastic practices are perceived as assemblages of different interrelated actors (human and nonhuman) that are always in the making. By acknowledging digital devices’ agency, this study focuses on day-to-day and concrete school practices and scrutinizes how these devices (together with other actors) enact the school concretely through performing specific operations. Moreover, this project contributes to the development of sociomaterial methodologies, by offering innovative adaptations to scrutinize digitally saturated educational settings.
