The semantic and pragmatic extensions of the conditional and future in Río de la Plata Spanish: (Inter)subjectivity and attentional coordination

The aim of this corpus-based research project is to gain insight into the relationship between the modal and evidential meanings of the Spanish conditional and future, and to inquire into their semantic and pragmatic extensions in the variety of Spanish spoken in and around the Río de la Plata Basin. By investigating the extensions of the erstwhile meanings of the Spanish future and conditional we will also address the question of the directionality of change. This will contribute to the general understanding of constructionalization, i.e. of the creation of new form-meaning pairings in particular contexts.
