En el cruce entre ensayo y crítica literaria: Quevedo y su tiempo a los ojos de Manuel Durán

Abstract in English This paper analyses the essayistic dimension of Manuel Durán’s Francisco de Quevedo (1978), a book generally considered to be one of the works of literary criticism by this Spanish-Mexican writer and scholar. It starts out from the hypothesis that the work’s essayistic dimension lies mainly in its ‘cronography’ and, to a lesser extent, in its ‘topograpy’, that is, in the discursive construction of the moment and the place from which discourse pretends to emerge. We will argue Durán constructs the historical moment of his writing by drawing a series of parallels with two other historical periods, namely the Spanish Golden Age and a transhistorical and transnational time-space in which world literature is situated. The cronography of a Hispanic present resulting from this exercise reveals a century marked by violence and instability and thus evokes the context of the Civil War which caused the author’s exile from Spain. Resumen en español Este artículo estudia la dimensión ensayística del libro de crítica literaria Francisco de Quevedo (1978) de Manuel Durán, escritor hispanomexicano, partiendo de la hipótesis que esta dimensión radica sobre todo en la ‘cronografía’ – y en menor medida la ‘topografía’ – del texto, es decir de la construcción discursiva del momento y del lugar de los cuales pretende surgir el discurso. Sostendremos que Durán construye el momento actual de la escritura a través de la puesta en paralelo, siempre indirecta, con otros dos tiempos, a saber, el Siglo de Oro español y un tiempo-espacio transhistórico y transnacional que se relaciona con el de la literatura universal. La cronografía de la actualidad hispana que resulta de este procedimiento deja traslucir un siglo XX español marcado por la violencia y la inestabilidad que causaron el exilio del autor.
