A typology of anaphoric and cataphoric relations expressed by English complex determiners

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Traditional discussions of anaphoric and cataphoric relations have focused mainly on how these are expressed by simple determiners such as the or this. This paper will provide a survey of the five basic types of phoric relations expressed by complex determiners, i.e. combinations of a primary and secondary determiner, e.g. the same, another, the fifth. Like simple determiners, complex determiners can (i) signal the retrievability of an instance, for instance through emphasizing coreferentiality, and (ii) express generalized reference. In addition, complex determiners can (iii) introduce a new instance of phorically given type specifications, (iv) set up a phoric relation between a given reference mass and a definite proportion of that reference mass, and (v) establish reference to an instance identified vis-à-vis a previous instance. The framework used to discuss these phoric relations is a general cognitive-functional one, drawing mainly on Langacker (1991, 2001).
