Sport plus and socially vulnerable youth: Opening the Black Box

Book Contribution - Chapter

There is a long history of viewing sports to achieve a variety of outcomes relating to the individual and the wider community. However, current practices in the field have been described as black boxes, with limited understanding of the underlying processes by which sports participation can contribute to positive social outcomes on the individual and the community level. By using the theory of social vulnerability as a framework, this chapter critically explores existing research on the conditions with regards to coaching and organizing, in which sports can facilitate positive outcomes for socially vulnerable youth.
