Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions of ICT Integration in Teacher Education in Turkey

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration in teacher education and teaching practices of
teachers is a complicated and challenging issue. As far as pre-service teachers are concerned, this becomes
critical because they need to be equipped with the competencies for their future teaching practices. The objective
of this study is to identify pre-service teachers’ perceptions of ICT integration in teacher education and its
association with their teaching practices. A stratified two-stage probability sampling design was used. Firstly,
three Turkish state universities with the highest and lowest number of the pre-service teachers were chosen.
Secondly, pre-service teachers from the subject domains of Turkish language, social sciences, elementary
education mathematics and science were selected. A qualitative method was used in this study. Data were
collected from 782 pre-service teachers from open ended questions in a survey and interviews were conducted
with 15 participants. Qualitative data were analyzed with thematic coding. The results identified the specific
conditions of ICT integration in teacher education and pre-service teachers’ perceptions of ICT integration and
the associations with their teaching practices.
