Spatial coding of serial position in working memory and episodic memory
Coding of serial order is a fundamental feature of both working memory and episodic memory. Both
types of memory require accurate maintenance of the order of events. In memory research there is
a strong tradition to investigate memory separately for short and long time intervals [1]. As a
consequence, the literatures on serial order coding in working memory and episodic memory
developed largely independently, and progression made in one domain is not typically linked to the
other. Here we try to bridge this gap, starting from an intriguing U+2013but so far overlooked U+2013parallel in
recent hypotheses about serial order coding in each of these two domains: the use of space in
representing serial order. In the current project we aim to test whether this parallel exceeds the
level of mere analogy and thus reflects a neuro-functional commonality.
