SCATE : Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment (R-5198)

The SCATE project primarily aims at the improvement of translators' efficiency. Current commercial translation tools do not meet the productivity requirements imposed by the globalisation of business activities and the increasing information flow. They include limited linguistic knowledge, are difficult to adapt to new domains, provide restricted support for speech recognition, and have interfaces which are technology-driven rather than user-driven. These limitations are also felt in other environments relevant to language professionals, such as interpreters, technical writers, archivists and developers of language elearning software. The need for innovation is shown by past industry-academia collaborations of the project consortium, which includes CCL, LT3 and Thomas More (TM) (translation technology, terminology tools), ESAT (speech technology), LIIR (information retrieval), and EDM (user interface design). These collaborations have led to the present project proposal, in which we will go beyond the state-of-the-art in several research domains. The techniques will be combined into a proof-of-concept system, a Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment (SCATE).
