Project

Travel Grant Bram Janssen to stay at Harvard University, Boston. (R-4130)

The aim of my research is to establish prospective epidemiological evidence for particulate and traffic related air pollution on ageing pathways occurring early in life, that may modify health trajectories and affect disease risk in later life (e.g. cardio-respiratory disease). I measure exposures during pregnancy and molecular markers in placental tissue and umbilical cord blood that are important in the aging process (mitochondrial function, telomere length, and DNA repair capacity). The goal of this stay abroad is to measure gene-specific DNA methylation of genes that play a pivotal role in mitochondrial biogenesis, telomere maintenance and general placental development that could link in utero exposure to particulate air pollution and disease phenotypes.
