Expressing contrariness. From adverbials to metatextThe article aims at proving the universal difference between homographic adverbs and meta-units on an example of contrariness markers. The difference is based on syntactic-semantic and prosodic features: adverbs conjoin verbs and can adjoin prepositions; they usually follow verbs in postposition; they fill a rhematic part of a sentence and allow for a non-contrastive contrast, and can be therefore negated. Metatextual homographs are indifferent towards semantic and syntactic features of a coocurrent; they prefer (in this case) initial position or appear in parenthesis; finally, they serve as a comment to (parts of) thematic-rhematic structure. The article also comments on distinguishing various meanings basing on contextual differences by presenting a possibility of a joint description of various usages..
