SpineVib - Exploring the use of vibro-acoustics in pedicle screw placement

The goal of SpineVib is to develop smart instruments for spinal surgery, which will be capable of exploiting information from real-time sensors to guarantee the operation precision, efficiency and quality. These instruments are to be used stand alone or in combination with robot-assisted surgery. To this end, SpineVib will explore vibro-acoustic techniques as a method to assess the initial stability of pedicle screws in the vertebra, giving intra-operative information to the surgeon. Moreover SpineVib will investigate new sensing methods to monitor the precision and quality of bone drilling in real-time. Measurement data will include mechanical and vibro-acoustic information e.g. force, torque and acoustic data.
