Project

Upgrading Informal Settlements by the Co-production of Inclusive Public Spaces: urban design strategies for sustainable and resilient development in informal neighborhoods in Guayaquil, Ecuador. (EC2020SIN274A101)

This project tackles the challenge of triggering sustainable and resilient development through the participative design of public spaces in low-income informal neighborhoods that were developed under unsustainable urbanization processes. Academics and professionals see inclusive public space as paramount for the construction of sustainable and resilient communities especially in informal settlements. Guayaquil, a city with the highest poverty and extreme poverty rates in Ecuador, is here seen as a representative working-case. By introducing community-based participative urban design-practices on inclusive public spaces, the project aims to influence the modus operandi of both academics and the different stakeholders of Guayaquil, and through this, integrate new co-produced knowledge into a guidebook on strategies and tool-box to support participative public space interventions at the local scale. At the same time, Guayaquil can become a model in workable visions on the sustainable resilient development in poor neighborhoods in other Ecuadorian and Latin American cities.
