Project

GOED GePAST (GOEDGEPAST)

Main research question/goal
The (now completed) GoedGePASt project is a follow-up to the GoodGeRUND demonstration project. The aim of this project was to raise awareness among dairy and beef cattle farmers about the ammonia emission problem, and to inform them about ammonia-reducing techniques and measures that are listed on the so-called PAS (Ammonia Reduction Plan) list. In consultation with cattle farmers, solutions were sought for problematic areas in applying PAS measures in practice. Further work is being done on demonstration spaces for PAS measures at ILVO and the Hooibeekhoeve.

Research approach
In this project, the partners used the same format as during the GoedGeRUND project: informing and sensitizing farmers and stakeholders via the ILVO website, publications in the agricultural press and the other communication channels developed during GoedgeRUND. In addition, a seminar,  an open house and a tour to Dutch farms (Ammoniakroute) were organized to inform the farmers as well as participation in the "Veetournee". The project management group selected 4 ammonia reduction techniques as the subject of discussion sessions about the problems and stumbling blocks related to the implementation or functionality of these techniques. For each of the 4 techniques, a group of stakeholders discussed the practical solutions and the problems related to this specific technique. At the Hooibeekhoeve, the demonstration of ammonia reducing floor systems continued; ILVO demonstrates ammonia reducing management techniques such as the manure cleaning robot and a spraying installation. At three beef cattle farms, we studied the feasibility of making an N-balance at the level of the cow, herd or farm.

Relevance/Valorisation
The (follow up) project ‘GoedgePASt’ successfully informed and supported cattle farmers about ammonia emissions, specifically for those cattle farmers that will have to reduce their ammonia emissions in order to renew their farming permit. In addition, the project aimed to find solutions for practical issues in the implementation of ammonia reducing measures. The project partners informed farmers about how to implement ammonia reducing techniques during demonstrations and information sessions,. The project results were communicated as planned on the project website, at seminars, a research trip, 3 publications in the agricultural press and an Open House.
