Families of choice

Book Contribution - Chapter

Lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (LGBs) more often rely on friends than on family for sexuality‐related problems. The importance that LGBs attach to their friendship networks in contrast to their family networks is echoed in the family‐of‐choice hypothesis. We discuss how chosen families reflect a unique characteristic of social networks in sexual minority individuals, as well as a familiar dynamic to compensate for lack of social support in several minority groups.
