Improving Performance Measurements through Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence is one of the emerging technologies for which a vast area of applications can be seen in the financial sector. In this PhD I will focus on the performance measurement of companies and projects. To measure this performance, Key Performance Indicators are used. These KPIs are set upfront and systematically reviewed and if necessary adapted, however, mainly based on the experience of management. With the use of Machine Learning, patterns can be recognised in the data based on past projects, to determine which factors are important in the performance of a project. In this way, better motivated KPIs can be defined to get a more accurate performance measure. This can be used for advanced portfolio management decisions, such as (research) project portfolio of companies or funds and business valuation in general. It could be interesting to see whether with this information predictions can be made about the success or failure of projects at an earlier stage.
