The effect of stress on gut permeability

The interaction between the gut microbiome, the gut barrier, and the host plays an important role in human health. Nevertheless, this interaction is not yet sufficiently understood, mainly because of difficulties investigating the gut. Some studies of the research group show that certain forms of social stress increase intestinal permeability. In this project a controlled stress induction in the laboratory will be used to further investigate the effect on intestinal permeability. In addition, human intervention studies will investigate how interventions that influence the gut microbiota (prebiotics, probiotics, physical activity) can influence the effect on gut permeability. To better understand the mechanisms, models will be used that simulate the intestinal environment as closely as possible. The Laboratory of Digestion and Absorption is part of an inter-university project that will develop a 3D biomimetic model of the host microbiome ecosystem in the small intestine and will validate and individualize the model using the human intervention studies.
