Perspectieven van ex-druggebruikers op herstel na langdurige residentiële behandeling in een therapeutische gemeenschap

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Research into the process of personal recovery in which both personal and environmental enhancing factors are mapped by clients themselves is rather scarce. However, gaining insight into these potentially supportive factors is important for both practice and policy. This research discloses the recovery path-ways of thirteen persons who used to have a drug problem through in-depth interviews about recovery mechanisms after following long-term residential treatment (in a drug-free therapeutic community). The CHIME model is used to explore personal experiences of recovery. During the recovery process, various life domains are transformed in a more meaningful way, until a certain quality of life is achieved. This is a unique, personal process that is strongly related to personal characteristics, the context and presence or absence of helping resources. Supportive internal factors and resources within the social network and so-ciety such as perseverance and willpower, a positive attitude, self-efficiency, good family and social bonds and a satisfying job proved to be essential factors. The added value of long-term treatment appeared through recognizing underlying problems, learning adequate coping mechanisms and gaining profound insight into negative dynamics and contacts in the past. Finally, social integration and being part of soci-ety are reported as extremely important factors during the recovery process.
