Equality, proportionality and the duty of care in animal welfare law - One Biology, one welfare - one law

The research is concerned with the animal's position in society, using the concept of 'One Welfare', which focuses on the interaction between the welfare of animals, human beings and their environment. 'One Welfare' is considered to be an extension of the 'One Health' theme, with which it partly overlaps. The last few months it has become even more clear that the health and welfare of human beings cannot be seen separately from the health and welfare of animals and the environment. There is only 'one health'. Animals play a large role here, but how we treat those animals can differ a lot. Those differences are not determined by the animal itself, but by humans. More concretely, the research focuses on the following questions: - How does society treat animals? - Which laws/regulations exist for the different animal groups: laboratory animals, farm animals, pets, vermin, ...? - Can and should this be streamlined to one uniform approach for all groups? - Which changes should be made to existing regulations? The research takes an interdisciplinary approach, involving law, ethics and welfare, and is animal-centered. The interdisciplinary nature of the research is guaranteed by the involvement of supervisors from different faculties at both universities. Each of these supervisors covers a specific discipline and the interaction between those disciplines ensures a broad approach. The research starts on the 1st of March 2021 and is a 'joint degree' with KU Leuven as main institution and UGent as partner institution, and supervisors from both universities.
