A 1.1 W/mm2-Power-Density 82%-Efficiency Fully Integrated 3∶ 1 Switched-Capacitor DC-DC Converter in Baseline 28nm CMOS using Stage Outphasing and Multiphase Soft-Charging

Two techniques, called Stage Outphasing and Multiphase Soft-Charging, that significantly increase the effective capacitor density for monolithic Switched-Capacitor DC-DC converters are presented. The proposed techniques are used in a fully-integrated 3:1 converter in a 28nm baseline CMOS process to achieve a power density of 1.1W/mm2 with an efficiency of 82%, which is significantly better than any other published baseline CMOS design and outperforms published converters using SOI technology.
