Project

Exercise and Nutrition for Healthy AgeiNg (ENHANce) project: effects of combined anabolic interventions to improve physical functioning, muscle mass and muscle strength in sarcopenic older adults.

Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength and function. This can lead to negative health outcomes such as reduced mobility, falls and increased mortality. Recent studies showed that physical activity and adequate protein intake can be effective in reducing the loss in muscle mass and muscle function. In this study, the effect of the combined anabolic interventions (protein supplements and exercise program) will be compared to the effect of a single intervention (exercise program). The novelty in this research is that these exercise and nutritional interventions are individualized and optimized based on the participants' pre-existing physical capabilities and protein intake. The aim of this project is to develop a more effective (non-pharmacological) treatment of sarcopenia.
