Risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease

The pathological changes attributed to Alzheimer's disease (AD) rarely occur alone in elderly brains. The most common pathologies are cerebrovascular diseases, which include cerebral amyloid angiopathy, small vessel disease, and cerebral atherosclerosis. Together with healthy aging processes and chronic diseases, like hypertension, these disorders lead to various cortical infarcts and hemorrhages. With this project, we want to fill the existing gaps in the knowledge on the relations between vascular and AD pathology using the cohort of 597 genotyped subjects with an extensive neuropathological profile established. Moreover, we aim at identifying genetic and non-genetic factors that could contribute to both types of pathologies. Equipped with this knowledge, we want to detect using diverse clustering methods subgroups of people with AD-vascular lesions that could benefit from separate treatment regimes.
