Re-Educating the Veterans and Reminding the Public: A Rehabilitative and Commemorative History of Nigerian Civil War

The research is tailored towards exploring and understanding the nature of re-integration and re-education strategy that was adopted to help disabled veterans of the Nigerian civil war - the troops of the federal military government. (Re-) education plays a vital role as one of the key components for rehabilitating disabled veterans. Veterans are generally in need of support to successfully complete their after-service transition. Disabled veterans in particular, however, need additional support to be provided for them to regain their independence and also live a successful post-military life. As such, re-integration comes with re-education in the form of either vocational education training or more. Anecdotal evident suggests that the veterans of the Nigerian civil war were provided with similar post-service training (s). However, not enough study has been done to understand the nature, strategy and the impact of the rehabilitation effort in Nigeria for the disabled veterans of the civil war. As a result, this study will make efforts to fill this gaping academic vacuum. This will help us to look at the intersection of education for adults with disabilities in a special way (for disabled veterans) with implications for defense studies, disability, special and adult education as well as cultural studies.
