Project

Fabrication of inkjet-printed organic photovoltaic cells integrated on smart contact lens

The goal of this project is to develop organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells capable of harvesting solar energy to assist a miniaturized battery to power a smart contact lens. Smart contact lenses are expected to add sensing to traditional contact lenses. These new functionalities will require electronic circuitry and a source of energy able to power the whole system. Nonetheless, the small size, curved surface and close contact to the human eye of the lenses impose many restrictions to the use of current batteries, which are either too bulky to be imperceptible by the user (the case of standard batteries) or not able to supply enough power for a time spam longer than few minutes (the case of miniaturized batteries).
