Exploring the therapeutic potential of stem cell therapy for achalasia

Achalasia is a debilitating gastrointestinal disorder caused by the selective loss of nitrergic neurons from the enteric nervous system in the oesophagus. Patients suffer from dysphagia, chest pain, heartburn and experience chronic long-term problems, including increased risk of oesophageal cancer. This is a challenging clinical condition to manage, as there are currently no effective pharmacological treatments. Addressing the need for more efficacious treatment options, this project will explore the therapeutic potential of stem cell-based therapy to replace missing enteric neurons, and ultimately restore ENS circuitry and normal oesophageal motility.
