The Point of the Matter: Performativity in scientific practices

Book Contribution - Chapter

The conference Does it Matter? Composite Bodies and Posthuman Prototypes in Contemporary Performing Arts (Ghent University, 2015) featured a ‘keynote dialogue’ between performance scholar and philosopher Maaike Bleeker (Utrecht University) and mathematician and philosopher of science Jean Paul Van Bendegem (Free University of Brussels). Speaking from their respective areas of interest and expertise, Bleeker and Van Bendegem discussed various examples of scientific processes that exposed performative mechanisms resulting from the entanglement of technological tools and human agency—a dynamic that is a characteristic feature of scientific practices.
