Monitoring of exotic mosquitoes in Belgium (MEMO)
Mosquitoes and mosquito-borne pathogens are an increasing threat to animal and human health in temperate regions. Important drivers for the introduction and spread of exotic mosquitoes are the significant increase in international trade and tourism but climatic and ecological changes also play a role. Based on the current distribution of exotic mosquitoes in Europe, the number of interceptions of these species in Belgium and predictions of habitat suitability for Aedes albopicus in Europe, the introduction and establishment of invasive mosquitoes in Belgium is very likely. Establishment of exotic mosquitoes is determined by a unique combination of factors related to ecology and genetics of the species, and environmental and climatic factors. Early detection of exotic mosquito populations before they can become established and a thorough knowledge of their ecology is critical for effective control.
