Attachment-focused Online Support: Stimulating Youth Resilience using Online Prevention of Attachment Ruptures in Families

Youth’s trust in parental support (aka attachment) has always been a crucial naturalresource for their resilience. When that support is insufficient or absent, youth is put atrisk of developing mental health problems. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic hasstrikingly demonstrated this: youth mental health problems rose dramatically, in partbecause families and parental support structures collapsed on a large scale under thepandemic’s pressure. To avoid future (large-scale) family collapses it is important toincrease youth resilience by strengthening their attachment to parents.Evidence-based tools to guide this process would benefit many families, but are currently lacking. In the proposed project, we aim to develop an easily accessible online tool, evaluate its effectiveness on family relationships and youth mental health, and research concrete implementation and dissemination strategies (e.g. in collaboration with the Flemish Government, Agentschap Opgroeien).
