Cell-cell interactions and the role of tissue microarchitecture in cardiac arrhythmias after myocardial infarction

Aging is the most significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and heart failure (HF). The onset of heart failure precedes cardiac hypertrophy which is usually the hallmark of the aged heart. With the increase in risk groups for HF and cardiovascular diseases, the quality of life is expected to decrease unless the associated factors are identified. Although much studied, the underlying reasons for increased susceptibility to cardiac hypertrophy in old age is yet to be established. We, therefore, aim to understand the factors associated with aging that leads to an increased susceptibility to heart failure and cardiovascular diseases with an emphasis on cell-cell interactions in the heart.
