Sustainability insights in the development of advanced biofuels

The transport sector is responsible for a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Although electrification of the light-duty segment is ramping up, renewable fuels are essential to further decarbonize the transport sector, in particular the heavy-duty, shipping, and aviation segments. The goal of this PhD is to gain insights into the sustainability of emerging advanced biofuels, and in the role of sustainability assessment in the development of these fuels. Decisions regarding the future exploitation of advanced biofuels must be made at various levels: at the plant level, the vehicle level, the fleet level, and the national level. This work investigates how different indicators and methodological approaches can support various decision-contexts. Additionally, the work aims to methodologically advance the field of prospective Life Cycle Assessment and to assess the future role of biofuels in Belgium in 2030-2050.
