Authorship as cultural performance: citing / siting the author, mid 16th century tot late 19th century

This project will study the complex concept of "authorship" since its slow and intricate emergence in early modern times up to the early 20th century when authors had become celebrities. It will look at such aspects of authorship as translation, gender, genre, co-authorship, pseudonymity and anonymity, the canon, and finally the fate of authors and authorship in theories and literary analysis.
