Alliance Research Group: Crossing the border between English and Spanish (DSN)

This project aimed at a linguistic and translational study of demonstrative elements in Dutch and Spanish. The research is carried out on the basis of a corpus of translated texts Spanish-Dutch and Dutch-Spanish. The combination of these two languages is particularly interesting, because the demonstrative systems are clearly different from each other. Dutch is characterized by a two-pole system (dit-this; that-die), like English, for example, while Spanish has a three-pole system (este-ese-aquel). How exactly the two Dutch poles link up with the three Spanish poles and whether or not they cover the same domain identically, has not been described exhaustively before.
