Cardinal compactness and generalized tree properties in combinatorial set theory, with applications

For this research, I will attempt to obtain a better insight into the properties of cardinals, focussing on compactness and several tree properties. How do they relate? What can we say about them using only ZFC, when do we require more assumptions? I will also look at how this can be applied to fields such as topology, logic and algebra.
